Bronte Parsonsge, Howarth. Home of Bronte Sisters, Anne Bronte, Charlotte Bronte and Emily Bronte Part of Pelago Travel Great British Explorer Tour to Yorkshire

Day Four - Tuesday

We journey westwards to Howarth, a traditional market town beneath a famous moorland landscape. We visit the Bronte Parsonage where sisters, Charlotte, Emily and Anne, lived and wrote astonishing works of literature. And we visit the nearby Jacobethan Shibden Hall – likely inspiration for Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. Later, we travel to the Piece Hall at Halifax, one of Yorkshire’s most impressive buildings, built in 1779 for the trading of ‘pieces’ of cloth (30-yard lengths of handloom made fabric, part of the long relationship between these landscapes and wool production).

Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal. Part of Pelago Travel Great British Explorer Tour to Yorkshire

Day Five - Wednesday

To Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden. Fountains is a majestic medieval ruin, once amongst the richest of England’s monastic houses. Its Dissolution decreed by Henry VIII, the abandoned Abbey was re-imagined after 200 years as the centre-piece to Studley Royal, an early surviving Georgian Water Gardens. The hall, church and deer park all add to the delight of this World Heritage Site. We continue to Harewood House, one of the most impressive of English country houses, described by Simon Jenkins as ‘St Petersburg on a Yorkshire ridge’ – with amazing architecture, collections, gardens and ‘Capability’ Brown landscape beyond.

Whitby, steps to Whitby Abbey. Part of Pelago Travel Great British Explorer Tour to Yorkshire

Day Six - Thursday

We venture to the East coast, travelling through the moorlands of the North York Moors National Park, and arriving for a great day in Whitby. This most atmospheric of fishing ports was home-port to explorer Captain Cook, and Bram Stoker’s literary location for Count Dracula’s arrival on these shores. We visit the ruined Whitby Abbey, dramatically perched on cliffs above the town, the venue in 664 AD where early Celtic and Roman churches settled their differences over the dating of Easter. Whitby is a good contender for the best place in England to enjoy fish and chips – on the plate, or wrapped up to indulge yourself beside the harbour.

Day Seven - Friday

Checking out of our hotel, there’s time for a last walk around York’s historic streets and a trip to Jorvik – an award-winning experience run by York Archaeological Trust, that evokes the essence of daily life in the original Viking settlement, and carefully sited immediately over the delicately excavated site. From York station, complimentary lunch and drinks can be enjoyed on board your 1st Class train service, direct to Kings Cross. You are scheduled to arrive in central London before 3.00pm, for transfer by Heathrow Express to the airport.
