Lake District Guided Tour

An expert heritage guided tour through the glorious English Lake District, where we’re immersed in dramatic scenery of mountains, fells, lakes and rivers.

We explore monuments from the Neolithic, Roman, and Medieval, amongst fells where stone walls date back to Viking settlers. We visit historic farms, wonderful gardens, and country houses.

Our tour helps us see these landscapes – both raw and tamed – through the eyes of others: thinkers, artists, authors, farmers and conservationists. In particular, we find the places of Lake Poet, William Wordsworth. Our encounter with these World Heritage Site landscapes is set within the long and changing relationship between people and nature.

Bed and breakfast is included for two nights in central London at the Tower Hotel. Dinner, bed and breakfast is included for the 4 nights of your tour, staying at the Wordsworth House Hotel at the heart of the scenic Lakeland village of Grasmere.

It’s an easy route from your hotel to Euston Station. Take the 8.30 train to Lancaster, and relax in 1st class accommodation with complimentary breakfast and drinks. We’ll meet you on arrival at Lancaster station at 10.54. We journey northwards, skirting Morecambe Bay to visit Levens Hall, a wonderful historic home with an incredible garden. Day Four - Tuesday

We start the day in Dove Cottage – home of the still young and radical William Wordsworth from 1799, and the heart of the Lake Poets’ movement. Across the fell we visit Hill Top, hill farm of Beatrix Potter, the author of famous children’s books, but also farmer and pioneering conservationist. We stop at Hawkshead, familiar to both Wordsworth and Potter, then travel to Coniston. Here we take a cruise around Coniston Water on the steam-powered launch ‘Gondola’. Before returning to our hotel, we have the chance to walk around the small mountain lake of Tarn Hows.

Day Five - Wednesday

Taking the chance to pause at Rydal Falls, we travel to catch the steam train from Haverthwaite to the shores of Lake Windermere, then cruise across the region’s largest lake to the popular village of Bowness. In the afternoon we visit Blackwell, a wonderful Arts & Crafts house, built for a Manchester industrialist, and now a beautiful gallery overlooking Windermere. A short distance away, we call in at Townend, an historic yeoman farm house, providing a fabulous insight into the lives of small-scale land owners who have tended these lands over countless generations.

Day Six - Thursday

We travel high into the Lakeland Fells and through Hardknott Pass. On slopes beneath England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike, we find remains of a Roman fort, one of the remotest postings in the Empire. High in the Lakeland Fells we take a tour of Eskdale Mill, then descend the valley on the charming light railway through wonderful scenery to the Cumbrian coast. We visit the remains of Roman bath houses, then to Muncaster Castle, historic home and gardens, where fugitive King Henry VI was found wandering by shepherds in 1464 – an event captured by Shakespeare’s War of the Roses account.
