East Anglia Guided Tour

We invite you to a holiday/vacation that takes you across the open landscapes and beautiful coastline of East Anglia. We explore castles, stunning cathedrals and the historic cities of Cambridge and Norwich.

We visit fine heritage examples of the English country house, including Blickling and Houghton Hall, each with their beautiful gardens. Across the landscape, we visit a Norman Castle and find evidence around us of Roman Britain, the Iceni tribe and Boudica, their warrior queen.

We find the pastoral landscapes of the Norfolk Broads. We visit ancient ruins on the historic coast, and we catch the tide to England’s largest colony of grey seals at Blakeney Point.

Dinner, bed and breakfast is included throughout your tour. Your first night will be spent at the Mitre Hotel, close to London, on the banks of the Thames, where we’ve included tickets for you to enjoy the experience of its close neighbour, Hampton Court Palace. Travelling into East Anglia, we will share our next four evenings at the Norfolk Mead Hotel, on the banks of the famous waters of the Norfolk Broads.

East Anglia Tour Itinerary

Arrival - Sunday

You are met at Heathrow Airport for convenient transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to explore. We include tickets for you to either visit nearby Hampton Court Palace or take a return cruise along the River Thames to Kew Gardens or central London. When you return, you can enjoy your dinner and relax in preparation for your tour to begin on Monday morning. Your hotel is idyllically situated on the River Thames, conveniently located for travel into central London, and an excellent departure point for our tour.

Day Two - Monday

We depart early for Cambridge, home to one of the world’s oldest universities. We begin with a guided tour of Cambridge University and the city, soaking up the atmosphere at Pembroke College and Saint John’s College. After lunch, sit back and relax on your guided punting tour on the River Cam, for one of the best views of the ancient colleges. We leave Cambridge, passing historic churches that rise from the open landscape, for our hotel, close to Norwich and set within the wetland scenery of the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads.

Day Three - Tuesday

We visit Binham Priory, a wonderful ancient church, set within rural tranquility and the ruins of its monastic house. Inside, medieval saints and angels peak through fading whitewash applied in the English Reformation. We walk across the field to Wharam Camp, remains of an Iron Age Hill Fort built by the Iceni tribe in the centuries before Roman occupation. At Morston Quay, we catch the tide, taking a boat to England’s largest colony of grey seals at Blakeney Point. Traveling along this picture-perfect coastline, we reach the Jacobean delights of Blickling Hall and its gorgeous gardens.

Day Four - Wednesday

We visit Gressenhall – dressed up, from the outside, like an aristocratic country house, but built instead in 1777 to house up to 600 rural paupers. We uncover the fascinating history of this vast former workhouse, the traditions of Norfolk rural life, and we ‘muck-in’ on Gressenhall’s 1940s working farm, with rare-breed livestock and Suffolk Punch heavy horses – gentle giants that powered the farms of East Anglia until the 20th century. Later, we visit Houghton Hall, the glorious hunting lodge of Sir Robert Walpole, Britain’s first Prime Minister – with beautiful grounds that match the best of English garden tradition with some first-rate contemporary landscape art, assembled by Houghton’s modern owner, the Marquess of Cholmondley.

Day Five - Thursday

We visit the vast Norman Keep in the city of Norwich. Dating from 1067, the site became Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery in 1895. Amongst its wonderful treasures, this is the best place to uncover the story of Boudica, Queen of the Iceni, in this once Roman occupied province. Suffering greatly at the hands of Roman occupiers, Boudica led her warriors in an astonishing campaign of destruction against the Roman Empire. Norwich is a wonderful city for you to explore, before we visit the site of Venta Icenorum, the Romano-British predecessor to the modern city. In the evening, we travel to the nature reserve of Ranworth Broad, where we take a boat through the atmospheric wetland scenery to the medieval remains of St Benet’s Abbey.

Day Six - Friday

We say goodbye to our hotel and travel through the vast open fields and skies of the Fens. Here we encounter the astonishing sight of Ely Cathedral, rising like a lantern above the flatlands. Built amongst this former ‘island amongst the eels’, this is the only English building to be ranked amongst the ‘Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages’. Ely itself is a charming and intimate city, and the childhood home of Oliver Cromwell, puritan military leader in the English Civil War (1642-51), who signed the death warrant of Charles I, and became Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland. We leave behind Ely, and the landscapes and heritage of England’s eastern region, returning you to Heathrow Airport at the end of your tour.
